TL;DR: Rock waterfalls, grottos, sheer descents, spillover spas, deck jets, bubblers and scuppers are the seven most common pool water features in Lake County. Grottos and large rockwork need a custom gunite build. Most of the other features work with fiberglass or gunite. Moving water raises pH faster and adds pump load. Rock features near a fence also have to be planned around Florida’s pool barrier rules.
What are the best pool waterfalls and grottos for a Florida yard?
The most popular pool waterfalls and grottos in Lake County are rock waterfalls, swim-in grottos, sheer descents, spillover spas, deck jets, bubblers and scuppers. Which one fits depends on your yard size, slope, pool type and how much upkeep you want. Grottos and big rockwork need a custom concrete build.
Here are the seven features homeowners ask us about most. After that, we cover what drives cost, how each feature changes upkeep, and the Florida safety rules to plan around.
1. Natural rock waterfall
Stacked boulders or cast rock send water over a ledge and into the pool. It gives you the look of a spring-fed swimming hole. Rock falls work well where a yard has some grade change, which you find in parts of Lake County. Taller rock means more weight, more plumbing and more pump flow.
2. Swim-in grotto
A grotto is a cave-like nook built into the pool, usually behind a curtain of falling water. You swim through the water into a shaded spot, which feels good on a July afternoon. The grotto roof carries real weight. That means a grotto has to be engineered and built as part of a custom gunite pool. It can’t be added later.
3. Sheer descent
A sheer descent is a metal or acrylic lip set into a raised wall. It pours a smooth, clear sheet of water. It suits modern homes and smaller lots, and it is quieter than a rock fall.
4. Spillover spa
A raised spa that spills into the pool works as a hot tub and a water feature at the same time. The spill edge gives you a steady sound and keeps the spa water moving.
5. Deck jets and laminar arcs
Small nozzles set in the deck shoot arcs of water into the pool. Kids and grandkids love running through them. Laminar jets make a glass-smooth rod of water, and many can be lit at night.
6. Bubblers
Bubblers sit on a tanning ledge or shallow shelf and push up a short column of water. They are one of the simpler features to add. They also work well for young children because they sit in shallow water.
7. Scuppers and water bowls
Scuppers are spouts set into a raised wall. Water bowls sit on pillars and pour from a raised basin. Some bowls pair a gas fire ring with the water. Both frame the pool nicely and stand out at night.
Which water features work with fiberglass vs. custom gunite pools?
Most features work with either pool type, but grottos and built-in rock shelves need a custom gunite pool. A fiberglass shell is made in a factory, so water features go around it, at the deck or in a raised wall. A gunite pool is shaped on site, so caves, ledges and rock shelves can be formed right into the structure.
| Feature | Fiberglass pool | Custom gunite pool | Upkeep level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rock waterfall | Yes, built at the deck edge | Yes, can be built into the pool wall | Medium: debris collects in rock gaps |
| Grotto | Not a good fit | Yes, with an engineered roof and walls | Higher: inside surfaces and lighting to clean |
| Sheer descent | Yes, in a raised wall | Yes, in a raised wall | Low to medium: scale can build on the lip |
| Deck jets | Yes | Yes | Low |
| Bubblers | Yes, on a ledge | Yes, on a ledge or shelf | Low |

What drives the cost of a pool waterfall or grotto?
Size, materials, plumbing and structure drive the cost more than anything else. Two waterfalls that look alike in a sketch can be very different jobs, so we price each one after we see your yard.
- Height and width: A taller, wider fall needs more rock, more support and more water flow.
- Real boulder or cast rock: Real stone is heavy and may need equipment to set. Cast rock is lighter and can be shaped to fit.
- Pump and plumbing: A large fall may need its own pump or a dedicated line and valve.
- Structure: A grotto roof and walls need engineering and extra steel and concrete.
- Lighting and controls: LED lights and automation add parts and wiring.
- Timing: Adding a feature during the build is simpler than cutting the deck and running new pipe later.
- Access and slope: Tight side yards or steep ground make the job slower.
You can finance the whole project, water features included, through Lyon Financial or Viking Capital.
How do waterfalls and grottos change upkeep and power use?
Water features add some upkeep. pH climbs faster, and moving water takes pump power. Trade publication WaterShapes explains that moving water loses carbon dioxide faster than still water, and losing carbon dioxide makes the pH rise. For you, that means testing a little more often and adding acid more often.
Pump choice matters too. According to the Building America Solution Center at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, a variable-speed pump can cut pool pump energy use by 50% to 90%. Setting the waterfall to run on a schedule, such as evenings when you are out back, helps keep both your power bill and your pH in check.
Pros of adding a water feature
- The sound of moving water covers road noise and neighbor noise.
- Lit features become a focal point at night.
- A grotto gives you a shady spot in the middle of summer.
- Jets and bubblers keep kids and grandkids busy for hours.
Cons to weigh
- pH rises faster, so you will add acid more often.
- Rock gaps catch oak leaves and pollen.
- A bigger feature means more pump run time and more electric load.
- Calcium scale can build up on sheer descent lips and scupper spouts.
- A grotto adds engineering and work to the build.
Do water features change Florida pool safety requirements?
No. Water features don’t replace any safety requirement, and rockwork has to be planned around those rules. Under Florida’s Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act, a new home pool needs at least one approved safety feature to pass final inspection. The options include a compliant barrier, an approved safety cover, exit alarms, or self-closing, self-latching doors.
The same law says a pool barrier can’t be placed where a permanent structure could be used to climb it. A tall rock waterfall or raised wall near a fence line needs to be laid out so it doesn’t work like a ladder. The Legislature also found that drowning is the leading cause of death for young children in Florida. If grandkids visit, set clear rules: no climbing wet rocks and no jumping from the waterfall. If your pool sits under a screen enclosure, the waterfall’s height also has to fit under the screen roof.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add a waterfall to a pool I already have?
Often you can. Deck-side rock falls, sheer descents and scuppers can be added later, but it usually means cutting the deck and running new plumbing. A grotto needs to be planned and built with the pool.
Are pool waterfalls loud?
It depends on how far the water drops and how fast it flows. A sheer descent makes a soft, steady sound. A tall rock fall is louder, but a variable-speed pump lets you turn the flow down.
Do I need to run my waterfall all day?
No. Most owners put the feature on a timer and run it when they are outside. Shorter run times use less power and slow down the pH rise.
Can water features be lit at night?
Yes. LED lights can be placed behind a waterfall, inside a grotto ceiling or in laminar deck jets. Lighting is easiest to add while the pool is being built.
Can I finance a waterfall or grotto with my new pool?
Yes. R & R Swimming Pools offers financing through Lyon Financial and Viking Capital, and it can cover the full project, water features included.
